Head to head: Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 8.4 vs TabPRO 10.1.

Samsung recently announced that they were adding a PRO series to their Galaxy line of devices. The two devices in question are the GalaxyTabPRO 8.4 and the GalaxyTabPRO 10.1. Now many consumers wonder what size of tablet is a better option. Should I buy the 10″ and enjoy the media experience on the larger screen or do I go for the 8″ and benefit from the portable size? In this review, I’m going to take a look at the two sizes and find out which one is superior.

Under the Hood
The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1 is running Android 4.4.2 aka KitKat with Samsung’s Touchwhiz UI on top. It has a 10.1 screen with WQXGA TFT LCD Technology. The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1 has an Octa Core processor (1.9 GHz Quad + 1.3 GHz Quad). I must note that when I did I benchmark test on Geekbench3, it only shows the 1.9 GHz Quadcore. This could possibly be due to the fact that Geekbench3 cannot identify an Octa Core processor yet. This kind of power may seem like overkill to the average user, however these two tablets have some native apps that will help you in a professional setting such as e-meeting and remote PC. The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO needs this kind of power to be able to run these apps.

The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 8.4 is also running Android 4.4.2 with Samsung’s Touchwhiz on top. It has a 8.4″ screen with WQXGA TFT LCD Technology. Now…where the Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1 has an Octa core processor, the 8.4″ only has a Quad core processor. Both have 16 GB of on board memory and 2GB of Ram.

The winner is…. Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1
I give this round to the Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1 solely based on that massive Octa Core processor. That kind of power is unheard and unmatched in a mobile device.

The OS

With Android being the most used mobile OS in the world, I’m sure that you are familiar with one of it’s versions. Android 4.4.2 aka KitKat is Google’s newest version of Android and they have really got a winner on their hands! Features like “Google Now” are making life easier. You can try this on your on device. Open up Google Now and say “Ok Google” and it will automatically open up the voice search feature of the app. This is great for when you want to text someone, look up a phone number or even a song! With upgrades like this, Google Now isn’t far behind it’s iOS counterparts. I can’t really talk about the OS without at least touching on Samsung’s Touchwhiz UI. My favourite part of Samsung’s Touchwhiz is the multi-window. This allows you to have two windows open at the same time, which is wonderful if you want to watch a movie while working on a document.

The winner is….. Google!
With both devices running identical verisons of OS and UI, this round was a tie.

The screen on any tablet is the marquee feature and is usually what companies hang their hat on. The Samsung GalaxyTabPro 10.1 and 8.4 are no different! These two power houses both have WQXGA TFT LCD screens. This technology is being boasted as a step above 1080p. With a 10.1″ screen and 2560 x 1600 display, the GalaxyTabPro 10.1 is a real treat when watching HD videos. The GalaxyTabPro 8.4″ is no different. Videos and photos just jump off the screen. Colour contrast is outstanding!

The winner is…… The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1

Even though the The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 8.4 has a slightly smaller screen, it really uses the real estate wisely. When holding both devices side by side, the difference in picture size is almost indistinguishable. However, I have to keep in mind what these devices are to intended to use for…. work. That extra screen size would allow you to have more windows open while working. When I was testing the e-meeting app, I found that the larger screen just made it much easier for editing documents that your team may be working on.

I give this one to the The Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1. With the benefits that come with a larger screen coupled with an industry leading CPU, the Samsung GalaxyTabPRO 10.1 is a work horse that can’t be stopped.
